Sometimes you have a great image that stands up on its own, but some photographers like to retouch or enhance their images to ensure the "wow" factor. There isn't a "better" or "worse," and it all boils down to a matter of taste.
The perfect example is right here on this image of a frog fish I did at the St. Anthony's wreck off of Maui, Hawaii. One image is untouched, the other is enhanced. You can decide which one is nicer.
